ELECTRICVEHICLES
The internal combustion engine's century-long dominance ends — and the grid absorbs the transition
The electric vehicle has completed the transition from ecological statement to mainstream consumer product. Global EV sales exceeded 14 million units in 2023, representing 18% of all new car sales worldwide. The technology works. The question is now adoption velocity, infrastructure density, and supply chain geopolitics.
The cost parity timeline has arrived faster than most projections. Battery pack costs per kilowatt-hour have declined from $1,100 in 2010 to under $130 in 2023 — an 88% reduction in 13 years. When the pack cost crosses $100 per kilowatt-hour, the total manufacturing cost of an EV reaches parity with an equivalent internal combustion vehicle without subsidy. Multiple analysts place that date between 2025 and 2027.
China has emerged as the dominant actor in both EV manufacturing and battery supply chain. BYD overtook Tesla as the world's largest EV seller by volume in Q4 2023. The CATL-dominated battery supply chain runs through Chinese processing of critical minerals, creating supply concentration risks that Western governments are actively attempting to reshape through industrial policy.
The infrastructure buildout — the charging network that must exist before range anxiety becomes irrelevant — is the true rate-limiting step in consumer adoption. Level 3 fast chargers capable of delivering 80% charge in under 20 minutes are being deployed at scale, but coverage density outside urban centers and major corridors remains insufficient to remove the range consideration from purchase decisions.
